The Sunday Sweat

Rocket Mortgage Classic

Every Sunday, the LoopGolf team writes a newsletter for our community highlighting all the action around golf, betting and culture.

Our ‘Easy Money’ hats are wildly popular right now so we’ve decided to do a limited run for our community only. As we start the process of opening up our own Shopify store, we wanted to begin taking pre-orders. We plan to sell only 50 at $40 a pop so please put your name on this list now if you’re interested as they will sell out fast. Much love!

This past Thursday, the latest version of ‘The Match’ took place with Patrick Mahomes & Travis Kelce taking on Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson at The Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas.

While all eyes were on Steph given his history of being an avid golfer, and a very good one at that, his current USGA handicap is 0.6, it was Mahomes and Kelce who stole the show.

After a first hole draw, Mahomes and Kelce went on a heater, getting it to 4UP thru six holes at one point. After Curry and Thompson tried to claw their way back, Mahomes and Kelce put the nail in the coffin on the 10th hole (it was a 12 hole match), winning 3&2 and securing their newest piece of hardware, some Tiffany links 💎

While Steph and Klay were busy trying to keep it on the rails, Mahomes and Kelce were clearly out there having the time of their lives 👇

The PGA TOUR is in Michigan this weekend where the Detroit Golf Club plays host. The grounds crew had to work overtime to ensure this event could even happen after a massive storm blew through earlier this week significantly damaging the course and many trees located on it. Shoutout to all the golf course grounds crew out there… you all are the real MVPs!

The Narrative: Rickie Fowler has put himself in a position to win for the third straight week and he’s got everyone behind him, including the super fan pictured below. Fowler birdied six of his last eight holes Saturday to surge into the Rocket Mortgage Classic lead at 20-under, giving him another chance to end a four-year PGA Tour victory drought. Fowler has led or shared the 54-hole lead 10 times in his PGA Tour career and has converted the advantage into a championship just twice. Can Fowler finally convert for what would be the most feel good story in golf in 2023?

Adam Hadwin made headlines a couple of weeks ago after storming the 18th green at the RBC Canadian Open with a bottle of champagne to celebrate his buddy Nick Taylor’s walkoff 70-ft eagle put in a playoff hole. Saturday, the Canadian tied the course record shooting 63 and heads into Sunday at 19-under. Check out this eagle putt on the back-9 of moving day:

Dylan Wu hit for a “cycle” during a roller coaster Thursday shooting 65 (-7). He had an albatross, eagle, birdie, par, and bogey during his first round holing out from 262 on the par-5 14th. He has sustained solid play the whole week and is T5 going into Sunday. Although we don’t have video footage of the double eagle, here is Wu setting up a tap-in eagle after a nearly 360 yd drive:

Rickie is dialed through the first three days… AGAIN. Is this the week he finally gets it done? It’s put up or shut up time for BDR!

Outright Winner: Rickie Fowler @ -105 ($105 to win $100)

Why? Regardless of his prior track record and forgetting about the fact that he let us down over the last two weeks, we’re backing Rickie and his new “I’m not scared to fail” mantra. If there’s one thing we’ve learned since starting The Sunday Sweat is that winning in golf is a process of failing week after week until the break through finally happens. Rickies been playing incredible golf as of late and we’re willing to bet real money that his time is now.
