The Sunday Sweat

The Memorial

Every Sunday, the LoopGolf team writes a newsletter for our community highlighting all the action around golf, betting and culture.

This past Monday (Memorial Day), we received a last minute invitation to fly to sunny South Florida and pitch LoopGolf to three professional golfers and their advisors.

Naturally, we jumped at the opportunity and flew out to West Palm Beach refining our pitch and not entirely knowing what to expect…

So yesterday morning, we walked into a room of ~20 advisors and three pros, spending the next 45-minutes to an hour pitching them on our vision for Golf’s first real-money super app, in what felt like golf’s equivalent of Shark Tank.

It’s too early to tell if we’ll land a fat check from the pitch, but it was an incredible experience. We’re thankful for the opportunity and flattered by the interest in what we’re building. More to come as things unfold!

It’s been somewhat of a tough stretch for Matthew Wolff. The 24-year old, known for his very unique swing, got off to a hot start after joining the PGA TOUR in 2019. He quickly won, earning a dub in July 2019 at the 3M Open with many predicting he would become the next great young talent on TOUR.

But something wasn’t quite right with Wolff mentally. In 2020, he became overwhelmed with the pressure to perform on TOUR and in 2021 he took a break from golf to focus on his mental health.

After a short stint back on TOUR, Wolff called it quits for good, only this time it wasn’t for a mental health break, it was to join LIV as part of the 17 players who initially signed with LIV. He would be joining Smash GC (one of the LIV teams) with Brooks Koepka as the captain.

The only issue with that is, Brooks doesn’t really vibe with the kid. Coming off his PGA Championship dub and feeling like the big man on campus, Koepka gave Wolff the boot, mentioning a, “clash of personalities.” Yikes. Rumor has it Koepka is now pursuing US Open champ Gary Woodland to replace him. Tough hit for ole Wolffy, but he’s still paid having received a $20M signing bonus to join LIV.

  • ⛳️ Tournament: The Memorial

  • 💰 Purse: $20,000,000

  • 🎥 Watch: 3-6pm ET (CBS)

The TOUR headed to Dublin, Ohio this week for the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village for the TOUR’s 11th elevated event of the year. Known as “Jack’s place” for the fact it was designed by Jack Nicklaus and is located in the region he was born and raised, it’s known as one of the toughest tests of golf for TOUR players each year.

The Narrative: Heading into Sunday, Rory Mcilroy is looking to shake his slump since missing the cut at the Masters. But even with Rory’s skill-set it ain’t gonna be easy. Currently T-1, at 6-under, Rory has Viktor Hovland right behind him, only one back at 5-under. Hovvy is looking to win for the first time on US soil and has been playing arguably the best golf of his career, with six top-10s, eleven top-25s, and 15 of 15 cuts made so far this season. Can Rors hold off the rock solid Norwegian and get the monkey off his back???

Rory has been a little busy the last 9 months playing captain of Team PGA against LIV. After regaining status as the #1 player in the world last year, this season his game has looked a little fatigued. He missed the cut at The Masters but bounced back with a T7 finish at the PGA Championship. He leads heading into Sunday and a win at The Memorial could be what he needs heading into the US Open in two weeks.

Keegan Bradley posted the day's low round with a 7-under 65 on Saturday. He was +3 to start and posted NINE BIRDIES to put himself just 2-back of Rory going into Sunday. Dialed 🎯

Check out these quick highlights from the top of the leaderboard heading into Sunday👇🏽

Outright Winner: The boy, Viktor Hovland at +850

Why? Hovland has been consistently in contention but has yet to really break through at a big event. This week at Muirfield, Viktor is 8th in Strokes Gained Putting, and tied for 4th SG Total. Hovland is 1-stroke back of Rory (who has played less than inspiring golf as of late) and is part of a group of 22 players within 3-strokes of the lead; it’s truly anyone’s game tomorrow. It’s just a matter of time before he breaks through - we feel getting him at +850 is great value.

Brand Details: Just like their name alludes, the team over at Quiet Golf focuses on treating the sport as if it were therapy. The west coast brand was started by Raul and Diego Diaz, two brothers who wanted to create a brand that encapsulates golf’s ability to provide a mental escape for all that choose to play. Through their minimalistic garments and storytelling, Quiet Golf provides an accessible approach to golf that many outsiders of the sport feel is missing.
