The Sunday Sweat

Wyndham Championship

Every Sunday, the LoopGolf team writes a newsletter for our community highlighting all the action around golf, betting and culture.

Thomas and Matt are both officially new dads! It’s our pleasure to introduce you all to young JuJu and young Leo. After only two short weeks on this planet, they’ve already learned to talk shit to one another and we couldn’t be prouder.

After a much needed break from PGA TOUR x LIV drama. The merger that shocked the world came back into attention this week as none other than Tiger Woods joined the PGA TOUR policy board.

Why it matters: The PGA TOUR and commissioner Jay Monahan have come under fire since the TOUR <> LIV merger announcement by TOUR players for the lack of transparency during and after negotiations.

With Tiger being added to the policy board, this ensures TOUR players have a seat at the table and an opinion during the negotiations of a possible merger between the two leagues.

This could mean the hurdle for LIV players to get back their TOUR status could be more difficult than many thought. Or, it could mean TOUR players who didn’t take LIV money and defect could be compensated for staying with the PGA TOUR. The important thing for TOUR players is their collective opinion is now represented by the 🐐.

  • ⛳️ Tournament: Wyndham Championship

  • 💰 Purse: $7,600,000

  • 🎥 Watch: 3-6pm ET (CBS)

The last event of the regular season. While not the strongest field, players currently outside the top-70 of the FedExCup standings, which would get them to the first playoff event next weekend in Memphis, are jockeying for position. Sunday should prove electric as players on the bubble make moves to secure their spot.

The Narrative: Oh Billy boy. One of the more eccentric players on TOUR, Billy Horschel might just be finding his stride right in the nick of time, again. Many of you might recall that in 2014, Horschel caught fire at the end of the year, winning the BMW Championship and the TOUR Championship finale at East Lake on his way to securing the season long prize of $10M (now $18M).

Coming into the Wyndham, Horschel needed at least a top-10 to keep his playoff hopes alive, he now finds himself in position to win the damn thing and safely make it to next weekend. Looks like Billy can cancel that trip to the Bahamas he had scheduled for next week with his family. Can Billy the Kid peak at just the right time again??

Wesley Bryan is one of the best stories of the week. To make it into the Wyndham Championship, he went toe to toe with his brother George in a Monday Qualifier Playoff. Wesley ended up making the cut and has played some really good golf for 55-holes, that is until he made a snowman quad on the 56th hole of his tournament. Here he is just one hole earlier using the toe of his putter to hole out for birdie:

Billy Horschel got mic’d up and gave some perspective to the year he’s had. Horschel is the same guy who, 2 months ago, was emotional in his press conference after shooting 84 at The Memorial saying that his “confidence has never been lower”. Pretty cool to see him turn it around in the same season and co-lead the field heading into Sunday 🔥

Ludvig Aberg has shown all season he can make birdies in bunches and seems to always be somewhere near the top of the leaderboard in all the events he plays. He is the reigning PGA Tour U No. 1 player and should be a name to keep your eye on for many years to come. The kid’s got game.

Outright Winner: Byeong Hun An @ +1100 ($100 to win $1100)

Why? Hun An has been steady eddy the whole week posting solid rounds three days in a row. He and Russel Henley are tied for 5th in Strokes Gained Total for the tournament. If he can put together another round like his first 3, he will give himself a shot on Sunday. For us at LoopGolf, +1100 is just too good 🤷🏽‍♂️.

Drip Pick: Original Snap Back (Cream & Black)

Brand Details: This is a two tone, 5 panel cotton snap back with "Original MacKenzie" embroidered on the front panel and MacBaggins embroidered on the left side panel. There is a custom woven label sewn inside the sweat band and a little "1985" tab sewn on the back. Not too shallow, not too deep. Big fans of this ball cap.
