The Sunday Sweat

RBC Canadian Open

Every Sunday, the LoopGolf team writes a newsletter for our community highlighting all the action around golf, betting and culture.

This week at Loop HQ we have begun testing the waters with a little app called TikTok. Our hope with this initiative is to begin acquiring more customers by having User Generated Content (UGC) posted on our behalf. Given the viral nature of our product and features like highlights, TikTok is the perfect platform for us to lean into.

This week we set a record for the best one day, one week, and one month it’s only June 11th) of new customers joining the LoopGolf community, with the majority of customer acquisition coming from TikTok.

We are looking for more golfers in the LoopGolf community to help us grow our product by talking about us on TikTok. If you are interested in being paid to help us get the word out, hit up money keegs at [email protected]

The World of Golf was shocked to it’s core this past Tuesday when the announcement was made of a merger between LIV Golf and the PGA TOUR. For all of us golf sickos out there, it truly was a “where were you when..” moment for the sport.

Virtually all the players on TOUR found out like the rest of us did… via Twitter. After it had been preached religiously that the PGA TOUR is a “player run TOUR” it was odd the players weren’t notified about the biggest move in the history of the sport. As you would expect, the guys on TOUR were NOT happy. After all, TOUR leadership convinced their players to stay with the TOUR, forgoing massive pay days from LIV.

As for the LIV golfers, they’re able to keep their HUGE signing bonus from LIV and now most likely be given the opportunity to compete in some capacity on the PGA TOUR again. But according to Rory, at a steep penalty.

What do we actually know about this “merger” of golf’s two leagues? There are so many unknowns at this point but here is what you absolutely need to know:

• The PGA Tour and LIV Golf will merge to create a new, for-profit company.

• The PGA Tour will remain a nonprofit organization, but it will cede control of its commercial business and rights to the new company.

• The new company will own the assets of both the PGA TOUR and LIV Golf.

• The merger is subject to regulatory approval.

  • ⛳️ Tournament: RBC Canadian Open

  • 💰 Purse: $9,000,000

Oh Canada 🇨🇦 One week before the highly anticipated 3rd major of the year, the PGA Tour heads up north to Canada to tee it up at Oakdale Golf and Country Club in Toronto. If there’s a sport Canada is synonymous with, it’s not golf… it’s hockey. However, there’s a big hockey presence at Oakdale Golf and Country Club’s 14th hole, where ‘The Rink’ came to life Saturday. There are hockey boards built around the tee box, with deep rows of fans screaming and clamoring as players enter the tee and prepare to hit their shots.

The Narrative: Late in his Saturday round, Rory McIlroy had ANOTHER solid chance to separate himself from the field. He was tied for the lead heading into his final three holes of the day. Number 16, 17, and 18 at Oakdale are 3 of the top 5 easiest playing holes this week and Rory finished with three pars. Maybe now that the pressure of LIV vs. PGA is off his shoulders, this could be the week he gets it done..

The hometown kid, Corey Conners, threw a dart here in front of his friends and family. Growing up just an hour and a half outside of Toronto, this win would hit a little different… Conners is 4-back of the lead looking to make a push for his second win of the season and third of his career.

We haven’t heard a ton from Tommy Fleetwood lately, but damn was he good on Saturday. He made NINE BIRDIES en route to the second lowest round of the day (-8), sharing a piece of the lead at times on Saturday. He now sits 2-back going into Sunday and still has yet to win on the PGA Tour. Stay hot Tommy Fleets!

Nick Taylor, also a native Canadian, is playing very well this week on his home soil. The fans were going crazy for this guy and at one point Saturday, he had the solo lead. The 69th-ranked player in the world now sits 3-back heading into Sunday. Would be pretty cool to see Taylor or Conners catch a dub in their home country tomorrow

Outright Winner: Nick Taylor @ +1600 ($100 to win $1600)

Why? Nick Taylor is on a HEATER. He went out and shot a 3-over 75 in round one of the tournament. I’m not sure what he did Thursday night, but it worked. He posted a 67 (-5) on Friday to make the cut, then the low-round Saturday shooting 9-under par to put himself in contention. CT Pan is 14-under but it feels like Sunday is anybody’s game as eight other players are at (-11) & (-12) within 3 shots of the lead… we’ll take the Canadian 🇨🇦💰

Brand Details: Jordan Brand is bringing that signature Travis Scott look to the Air Jordan 1 Low Golf. White, olive green, and black, fitting right in with the earth-toned aesthetic championed by the TS x AJ collabs, but with modified made-for-golf tread.

SHEESH. Rumor has it that these could be dropping very soon… so we want to get y’all ahead of the game and ready for when they get released. You don’t want to miss these.
